Children display their intelligence in many different ways, especially early in their development. However, literacy stands out as one of the best gauges of intellectual progress. Most kids demonstrate their interest in learning by asking questions. If you’re reading your child a story, pay close attention to the questions he or she asks once the tale is told. If the book is part of a series, encourage the child to try reading some of the next installment out loud - with a little help from mom or dad.
Early literacy development provides children with considerable advantages, but they may go unrealized without the proper educational tools. Reading comprehension games and software can be used to supplement reading material, making it more palatable for children with short attention spans. Bear in mind that not all kids learn the same way - some are visual learners, but others will learn best from audio and physical material. Successful attempts at early literacy development hinge partly on the learning materials themselves, but parental persistence is also key.
